Preparing your video submission. Video submissions provide important insights into CUIs but can have accessibility problems when not generated correctly. We are asking all authors to make an effort to make their submissions more accessible at every point in the submission process. Final video submissions will need to be captioned.
As you prepare your video, please follow these steps from the SIGACCESS guide for accessible presentations. As a rule of thumb, the goal is to have all key information in your video available through both the visual and audio channel:
- Provide both audio narration and text captions. The visual and audio information should be individually complete and equivalent, so that someone with a visual or a hearing impairment can understand your video.
- In the audio narration, read all text and describe all graphics, images, animations, and the visual elements of video clips.
- Text captions can be included directly in the video as subtitles (as either closed or open captions) or uploaded as a separate closed-captioning metadata file.
- Keep any written text brief (other than the captions, which should accurately reflect speech).
- Use a high contrast color scheme and large sans serif fonts for any slides, text or graphics. Ensure that any open captions (captions that appear at all times, as is sometimes done for participant speech in a noisy recording) or labels on videos are on a solid background with high contrast.
- Use different shapes and patterns to provide a means other than color to visually distinguish elements in any graphics or animations.
- Speak clearly and not too quickly, avoiding slang and colloquialisms. If the speaker is video recorded, ensure that they are facing the camera to enable lip reading.
